Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54.
Warner drowned on Sunday while on vacation in Costa Rica, according to the country’s Judicial Investigation Agency. The tragic incident happened at Playa Grande in the town of Cocles, located in the Limón province, between 2:00 and 2:30 PM local time.
Authorities said Warner was swimming when he was caught in a strong current and pulled out to sea. Bystanders managed to rescue him and bring him back to shore. The Costa Rican Red Cross responded and tried to help, but Warner was declared dead at the scene.
Warner rose to fame as the youngest son of Bill Cosby's character in the hit sitcom *The Cosby Show*, which ran from 1984 to 1992. He earned an Emmy nomination in 1986 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Theo.
He was handpicked by Bill Cosby for the role after a national casting search.
After *The Cosby Show*, Warner continued his acting career with roles in several TV shows, including *Malcolm & Eddie*, where he starred alongside comedian Eddie Griffin. He also made guest appearances on popular series like *The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air* and *Sesame Street*.
In more recent years, he played Dr. AJ Austin, a heart surgeon, on the medical drama *The Resident*.
Warner was also known for his musical and spoken word talents. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R\&B Performance, sharing the honor with Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway for their cover of Stevie Wonder’s "Jesus Children of America." In 2023, his spoken word album *Hiding In Plain View* earned him another Grammy nomination.
Warner’s death comes as a shock to fans around the world who admired his work both on screen and in music.
