Farhan Hasan had just finished an exam and was talking with friends when a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into his school campus, killing at least 27 people. "The burning plane was hitting the building right in front of my eyes," Farhan said. The jet slammed into a two-story building at Milestone School and College in a northern suburb of Dhaka, causing a massive fire and thick smoke. Over 170 people were injured in the crash.
The Air Force said the F-7 jet had a mechanical fault shortly after taking off for a training exercise around 1:00 pm local time. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, was among those killed. Farhan recounted that his best friend, who had been with him in the exam hall, died right before his eyes as the plane flew over him. Many parents were also present at the school because it was the end of the school day, and the plane caused casualties among them as well.
Teachers witnessed the tragedy unfold. One teacher saw the jet directly hit the building, and another described hearing a loud explosion followed by fire and smoke. The area, a densely populated residential neighborhood, quickly filled with crowds as ambulances and volunteers worked to rescue the injured and recover bodies.
At least 30 ambulances transported victims to hospitals, including the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where more than 50 burn victims were treated. Most of those injured are children aged between nine and 14. Seven hospitals across Dhaka are receiving victims. Many families of the victims gathered at the hospitals in grief.
The government declared Tuesday a day of mourning with the national flag at half-mast. Muhammad Yunus, the leader of the interim government, expressed deep sorrow and vowed to investigate the cause of the accident and provide all necessary assistance. The Air Force said the pilot tried to steer the jet toward a less populated area after the mechanical fault occurred but could not avoid crashing into the school.
