South Western Railway (SWR) has apologised after a major signalling fault caused serious disruption at London Waterloo, one of the UK’s busiest train stations.
The issue was first reported around 5:30am on Monday, leading to 14 platforms at the station being taken out of service. As a result, passengers were warned to expect "major disruption" that could continue into Monday evening.
Although National Rail confirmed that all lines have now reopened, services to and from Waterloo may still face severe delays or cancellations. Commuters were urged to check their journeys before travelling, as disruption is likely to last until the end of the day.
SWR said it is "gradually reintroducing train services across our network" but warned that trains could still be "delayed, revised or cancelled" throughout the evening.
A statement on the SWR website explained: "We are currently recovering our services, however trains in and out of London Waterloo are subject to cancellations, delays and last-minute changes."
Routes between London Waterloo and destinations such as Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth, and Weymouth are experiencing the worst of the disruption, with many services cancelled or delayed.
To help passengers, National Rail announced that tickets would be accepted at no extra cost on certain bus and train routes. Any unused tickets dated for Monday will remain valid for travel on Tuesday.
London Waterloo was the UK’s fourth busiest train station last year, with around 62.5 million passengers passing through in 2023/24, according to the Office of Rail and Road.
