Mikel Arteta was full of praise after Arsenal’s first pre-season game ended in a 1-0 win against AC Milan at the National Stadium in Singapore. Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match, helping the team begin preparations for the 2025/26 season on a strong note.
Arteta was especially pleased with the team’s consistency throughout the match, despite many changes in the lineup.
“It’s good to win and keep a clean sheet as well,” he said. “Overall, it was a very solid and consistent performance. We made a lot of changes, but all the players showed they’re playing at a high level.”
The match was also memorable for the debut of academy talents Max Dowman and Marli
Salmon. Arteta was excited to see so many young players getting a chance to perform.
“It’s a big joy to see kids playing at 15, 16, 17 years old and doing so well at this level,” he added.
In addition to the youngsters, fans got a first look at new signings Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Arteta said the trio have adapted quickly to life at Arsenal.
“They’ve settled in really fast,” he said. “We have an incredible group here. The squad has made the new players feel welcome right away. You could see they were relaxed and confident in what they did. It was a very positive performance from them.”
The game was Arsenal’s first in Singapore since 2018, when they beat PSG 5-1. The local fans showed up in big numbers again, and Arteta was touched by the warm support.
“It was very special. We’ve been here before, and we know how important this place is for our club,” he said. “It’s great to strengthen the connection with our supporters here, and we’re looking forward to more of the same in our next game.”
Looking ahead, Arteta said the team will now review the game and assess each player’s physical condition after a demanding match.
“We’ll look at each player closely – how they’re feeling physically – and keep moving the team forward. We want to maintain the good things we’re doing and work on the small improvements as well.”
